Case Study
Anomalous results during a clinical trial led executive management to believe that they had made a new discovery with intellectual property implications. Biotechnology excutives lacking appropriate scientific background or not familiar with the minute details of the "discovery," commit scarce company funds to pursue the discovery. Cognitive constraint leads the scientific staff to "want to believe." Instead of trying to identify what may be administrative or scientific error, they begin to attempt to further develop the discovery. A scientific or technical audit in these cases can confirm or reject the hypotheses emerging from the results and at the same time prevent wasting time (in the case of a pending FDA approval) or money (in the case of efforts to further develop the discovery).
